Eleven degrees north is the latitude of the frankincense coast.

The Coast is named for ports. This collection is named for a line on a map. Maydh, Bosaso and the Cal Madow mountains sit at roughly eleven degrees north, on the stretch of coastline the ancient world bought its incense from.

The three fragrances of The Coast sit between the equator and ten degrees north. This collection sits just above them. The number is the whole difference between the two: not three cities, but the single band of coast where the frankincense tree actually grows.

The Coast is geography. 11°N is what happens indoors.

Olibanum is the smoke. Cordovan is what the smoke leaves behind.

The smoke.

Warm, soft and luminous. Cardamom over Somali incense and bergamot, settling into musk, amber and vanilla. Nothing in The Coast is sweet in this way.

Olibanum is the English word for frankincense. It reached English through the Arabic al-luban, which is the same word Somalis still use: luban. The name on the bottle is English, and it is carrying the heritage without asking anyone to learn anything.

What the smoke leaves behind.

Dark, dry and woody. Geranium and pepper over oud, sandalwood and leather. Cordovan is a leather rather than a place, and the fragrance is named for the material.

Cardamom runs through both fragrances. It is the signature of the collection.
